Abstract(s)
It has recently been possible to add some hitherto neglected paintings to the list of works by Johann Wenzel Bergl (1718-1789) in Eastern Bohemia and his home town of Dvůr Králové nad Labem. In addition to Jesus Falls beneath the Weight of the Cross, which is probably a single station preserved from another of his cycles of the Stations of the Cross (the intended location for which is unknown), he also painted the work St. John of Nepomuk Distributing Alms for the church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Dvůr Králové. The closeness of the contacts between the painter and the deans of Dvůr Králové Josef Rudl (†1768) and, in particular, Ignatz Peiker (†1783), is documented by the recent discovery of outstanding portraits of the two clerics, which we can attribute to Johann Wenzel Bergl.
