Abstract(s)
The aim of this article is to clarify the status of Byzantine archaeology, its development, and its relationship with archaeology of the European Middle Ages. Byzantine archaeology is a young discipline which faces a number of problems and limitations. In the first part of the paper, the authors analyse the problem that basic terminology is either lacking or inadequate. They then evaluate the research history and the basis of Byzantine archaeology through reviewing publishing activities. Finally, current trends and future perspectives in this field are discussed.
