Román Ferdinanda Peroutky je antihistorie, spočívající v tom, že Panna Orleánská není upálena, ale osvobozena. Próza má dvojí vrstvu - fikční a kvazifikční. Fikční vrstva se vztahuje k osudu Jany z Arku, přesněji řečeno k devalvaci jejího osudu po problematickém osvobození. Hrdinou kvazifikční vrstvy je spisovatel, který historii o Panně Orleánské píše. Druhá vrstva se odehrává ve Spojených státech a nepřímo vypovídá o nejednoznačném postavení samotného tvůrce a o jeho nečekaném konečném rozhodnutí. Všechny další stavebné prostředky mají v románě podvojný ráz - postavy blíženců, figurální dvojice, konfrontační a onirická scéna, architektonické a figurální zarámování.
