Popis
Beyond the gradually more and more irrational topographical setting, i.e. St. Petersburg, there are quite a few further important thematic and motive-based correlations that interweave the pieces of Nikolai Gogol's short story cycle called Petersburg Tales. Among these you can find painting as an art, the figure of the painter as an artist, and the genre of portrait painting itself. "The Portrait" focuses on an actual portrait with a magical impact to it, and builds the narrative about its creator around this focal point. The combination of the appearance of the portrait as a literary and pictorial form and the ability of language to express itself through pictures results in a special interaction during the course of which the painting actually comes to life. However, this enlivenment in the short story at the same time triggers expressly demonic effects; it results in the splitting of the protagonist's personality and leads to the appearance of the double. From this stage on, this duality can also be followed with ease at the level of the narrative. I believe that one of the separate voice (part)s gives expression to the significance of the painting prepared according to the iconic principle as well as to the metaphysics of icon painting (as if it were an antithesis of the devilish portrait painted about the usurer), which I wish to prove on the basis of an icono-theological essay written by Pavel Florensky.
