Popis
This paper analyzes the role of codified Czech in the process of formation of the Slovak national identity in early 19th century. The main emphasis is on the analysis of the role of codified Czech in the formation of Slovak national identity as manifested in P. J. Šafárik's letters to Ján Kollár, František Palacký and Martin Hamuljak. The paper analyzes the formation of young P. J. Šafárik's views on the this theme from time of his study in Jena, Germany (1815) up to his stay in Prague (1833). The main argument of the paper is that concering "the Slovak question", his views had not radically changed. He considered the Slovak nation to be an autonomous community with its own language and tradition. From the perspective of the Slovaks, he considered the Czech language to be rather a foreign language, although very close to Slovak, understandable and definite codified language. Being a part of Hungary, in his view, through the use of this language the Slovak society could develop most spiritually, most effectively and quickly.
