Abstract(s)
The present article deals with the semantics and functioning of gustative adjectives suavis and dulcis as well as of their derivates in Aurelius Augustinus' works. The phenomenon of synesthesia, i. e. combination of primary gustative meanings with perception of odours, sounds, visual objects etc. is characteristic for both lexemes. The result of synesthesia consists in the change of hierarchical structure of above-mentioned gustative lexemes from one-level (gustative meaning proper) to three-level structure (physiological, psychological and abstract levels). The analyzed lexemes used metaphorically are near in their meaning, and can interchange to a certain degree. That allows them to be regarded as partial synonyms. The maximal meaning convergence of suavis and dulcis occurs in syntagmas with abstract or metaphorically used concrete substantives due to the high degree of abstraction.
