Abstrakt(y)
The authors of this article deal with the role of religious institutions and their function in the religious and spiritual life of Czech society in the 1990s. Drawing on existing sociological surveys, they demonstrate that there exists a large discrepancy between the proclaimed religious identities and the actual religious life including participation in services, baptism, wedding ceremonies, etc. -- The participation in these religious activities is very low when compared with the relatively high number of people who declare themselves as religious. This situation confirms that the "religious identity" is connected more with the process of labelling than with spiritual transformation and real identification with a concrete religious group and its way of life. -- Analyses of surveys also show that the role of traditional religious institutions decreased in Czech society during the 1990s.
