Abstract(s)
This article discusses the affinity of the ancient riddle and the epigram. A comparative analysis of the collection called Aenigmata Symphosii and Martial's epigram collections Xenia and Apophoreta reveals thematic as well as structural similarities. It is deduced that Symphosius was strongly influenced by Martialis. This supports the thesis that the literary genres of riddle and epigram are in close relationship.
