Catull's poem Attis (carmen 63) involves the issue of barbarism as one of its hidden aspects. The word barbar is used in two different meanings in Catull: a) in the sense of exterus, b) as a term with psychological and moral significance. In Attis, Catull employs the second meaning: the world of barbarian values and that of human (Greek and Roman) values are opposite to each other. The negative connotations of the term "barbarian" reflect the historical practice of Catull's times.
