Popis
The writer claims in his work on the evolution of farming that the 19th century in Horňácko (region of White Carpathians in East Moravia) is characterised by great misery, low education, insufficient technological equipment and low plant yield. Hunger was commonplace in small peasant homes. This situation only changes at the beginning of 1930s with the advent of machine-based farming; some conservative procedures, however, have been kept throughout the socialist era (1948-1989) until today. The writer (born 19.. in Javorník) based his information mostly on autopsy, the stories of his parents and, chiefly, grandparents, and from chronicles, being the local chronicler for a period of time. He experienced and used many of the historical farming procedures. Together with his profession as a teacher, he is still an efficient small farmer. The work is divided into these parts: 1. What was planted (crops) - Cereals, gathering, trashing; Farmer's diary; Fruit and its processing; Poppy, hemp and its processing -- 2. Cattle breeding and related topics - Manual mowing, scythes and mowers; Gathering, transport and storage of hay; Cows, sheep, pigs, goats, pasture; Dairy products; Horses, fodder cutting, sower; Gin and other engines; Getting grass from the woods; Means of transportation (cart, wheelbarrow, barrow); Geese, rabbits, bees; Hens (egg as a currency) -- 3. Other sources of income - Hunting and poaching weapons; House crafts (wood, iron); On mills -- 4. Family and society; Bread baking, laundry, lightening; Damson-cheese cooking, fruit drying; Plum brandy and other alcoholic stimulants; Plumage stripping, pig-sticking, meat preservation; Holidays - Christmas, carnival ("fašanek"), Easter ("šlahačka"); Harvest festivals, feasts, children's games -- 5. The socialist era (1948-1989) and present; On reserves; The "Z" action and voluntary work; Technology - home-made machines; About the writer
