Popis
Traditional research on La Tène art focuses on metallic items and a restricted corpus coming from a reduced number of sites. This situation has led to a restrictive definition of so-called "Celtic" art, limited to prestige goods attributed to the aristocracy's desires and commands. Such interpretations have shaped an image of European Iron Age societies where the elites seem to be the only leaders and actors of all economic, political-religious, cultural and thence artistic movements. Drawing upon several examples, the aim of this paper is to take a new look at materials and assemblages considered as marginal, especially stamp-decorated pottery. Examining the contexts, La Tène art appears to have belonged to a broader phenomenon, the emergence of a common visual culture in many European regions during the Iron Age, not necessarily reserved for the elites.
