Abstract(s)
During the period following the First World War, Czech theatre and set design in Brno gradually found sources of inspiration in the work of modern European artists and set designers, and adapted them in an original way to meet their own needs and artistic purposes. During the 1920s and 1930s, several avant-garde artists were invited to work with the Czech theatre scene in Brno, including Bedřich Feuerstein, František Muzika, and František Zelenka. Bedřich Feuerstein, who was an architect, graphic artist, painter, and set designer, collaborated on two productions, Wagner's opera Tannhäuser and the drama The Embezzlers by Valentin Katajev. His set designs introduced unconventional approaches, such as working with the stage area, and a tendency towards theatricality and stylisation of the pictures on the scenery.
