Abstrakt(y)
In the years 1964–1973, Bohumír Matal, a figure with many artistic interests – painting, drawing, and creating designs for applied graphic art and decorative architectural features – worked mainly with theatres in Brno as set designer on fifteen theatrical productions (in three cases designing not only the scenery but also the costumes). An analysis of three productions that were staged at the State Theatre in Brno in the years 1965-1968 (Václav Kliment Klicpera: Hadrián z Římsů [Hadrian of Římsy], premiere 30 April 1965; Milan Uhde: Děvka z města Théby [Whore from the City of Thebes], premiere 14 May 1967; and Euripides – Jean-Paul Sartre: Trójanky [The Trojan Women], premiere 22 November 1968) maps out the principles underlying his work (lack of descriptiveness, sobriety of the stage composition, use of poetic metaphor, and use of space), and his contribution to the field of stage design in contemporary Czechoslovakia.
