Johann Franz Josef Schenelli (Genelli) v Kroměříži a Vídni : případ "akademického" vyšívače ve střední Evropě na konci 18. století

The study deals with a newly identified work by the embroiderer to the Prussian King, Johann Franz Josef Schenelli, also Genelli or Genelly (1724–1792), which he created for the residence of the last Bishop of Olomouc, Maximilian of Hamilton, in Kroměříž/Kremsier around the year 1770. This embroidered floral still life on a large fire screen, created after a painting by the Roman Baroque painter of Dutch origin Karel van Vogelaer (1653–1695), appears to be the only work by this artistic craftsman to have been preserved. Schenelli was famous in his day and after receiving his education at the artistic academy in Copenhagen worked at the courts of the Empress Maria Theresa and the Prussian King Friedrich II. in Vienna and Berlin. In addition to drawing attention to this exceptional work of artistic craftsmanship, the main aim of the study is to interpret it in the broader context of critical evaluation of the embroiderer's art at that time, and the changing role and status of professional embroiderers in the artistic hierarchy and artistic practice at the end of the 18th century.
