Abstract(s)
The "Marat Icones" sketch book, which contains drawings and etchings, was originally owned by Premonstratensian Dionysius Strauss (1660–1720), a monastic painter and concettista working in the Premonstrate monastery Hradisko near Olomouc. According to existing research, Strauss gained the sketch book during his residence in Rome (1691–1692). The book contained various drawings, the authors of which were sought out in the circle of Carlo Maratti (1625–1713) and Giovanni Battista Gaulli, known as il Baciccio (1639–1709). After his return, Strauss wrote his own iconographic programs into the sketch book and created his own drawings. However, the most recent analysis of Strauss' album has shown that this original interpretation should be – at least partially – revised. The reason for this are new attributions of several drawings, which naturally lead to a reassessment of the interpretation of the whole album, of its origin and formation.
