Abstrakt(y)
The roots of the psychological accounts of optimism and pessimism are found in the various treatments of optimism and pessimism that have been advanced by leading philosophers. In this article we trace the historical development of philosophical understanding of optimism and pessimism. In philosophy, optimism and pessimism designate competing, antithetical positions. Philosophers are regarded as optimistic if they treat the cosmos as generally hospitable to the aims and aspirations of human beings; they are regarded as pessimistic if they treat the cosmos as generally indifferent or even hostile to the flourishing of human beings and civilizations.
